Social Counselling

FIM counsels and supports around 1000 migrant women and their families every year.  In addition to German the consultants of FIM speak nine other languages. Thus, they can support women in crisis in their mother tongue  (native language) and offer them a culture-specifical consultation. The main objectives are:

  • Promotion of the integration process
  • Overcoming crisis
  • Emancipation from violent relationships
  • Development and implementation of new and independent life prospects

Many of the women coming to FIM have a variety of problems. In cases where violence in a relationship, problems regarding parenting, unemployment and physical limitations concur all at the same time, they find themselves at their wits’ end. Together with the women seeking advice, the social counsellors at FIM try to find a solution. Since finding a solution often involves other counselling institutions, FIM assumes the responsibility for the case management. The counselling is free, confidential and anonymous, if desired.

The opportunity to speak to a woman from their own cultural background in their native language about very personal and emotionally challenging experiences is eminently important for many women. This opens them up the opportunity to reflect on their experiences of violence and conflict for the first time and develop new perspectives together with the counsellors.
